And an angel of the LORD came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you.
An angel of the LORD went from Gilgal to Bochim and said, 'I brought you up out of Egypt and led you to the land I promised to your ancestors. I said I would never break my agreement with you.'
God is reminding the Israelites through his angel that he kept his promise to rescue them from Egypt and bring them to the promised land, and that he will never break his covenant with them.
📚 Historical Context
This occurs after Joshua's death when the Israelites had settled in the promised land but were beginning to compromise with the pagan nations around them. Gilgal was where the Israelites first camped after crossing the Jordan River, while Bochim (meaning 'weepers') became the place where they would weep over their unfaithfulness. The angel is speaking as God's representative, reminding them of the Exodus and God's faithfulness to the covenant made with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
