And when they were by Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said unto his master, Come, I pray thee, and let us turn in into this city of the Jebusites, and lodge in it.
When they reached Jebus, the day was almost over. The servant said to his master, 'Please, let's stop and spend the night in this city where the Jebusites live.'
The servant is suggesting they stop for the night in a nearby foreign city because it's getting late in their journey.
📚 Historical Context
In the book of Judges, which describes the period after Joshua's conquest when Israel was led by judges amid moral and social chaos, a Levite is traveling with his concubine and servant from Bethlehem toward the hill country of Ephraim. As they approach Jebus, an ancient city inhabited by the Jebusites and not yet conquered by the Israelites, the day is ending, and the servant suggests staying there for the night. This reflects the dangers of travel in a divided land where foreign territories posed risks to Israelites.
