When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.
When I saw a beautiful robe from Babylon, about five pounds of silver, and a gold bar weighing about one and a quarter pounds among the plunder, I wanted them badly and took them. Look, they are buried in the ground in the middle of my tent, with the silver underneath.
This verse shows Achan confessing that he saw valuable items, couldn't resist taking them despite God's command, and hid them in his tent.
📚 Historical Context
In the book of Joshua, the Israelites were conquering the Promised Land under God's guidance after their exodus from Egypt. After the victory at Jericho, God strictly commanded them not to take any spoils from the city, as they were devoted to destruction for His purposes. Achan, an Israelite, disobeyed by coveting and hiding valuable items from the plunder, which brought divine judgment and led to Israel's defeat in the next battle.
