Behold, I have divided unto you by lot these nations that remain, to be an inheritance for your tribes, from Jordan, with all the nations that I have cut off, even unto the great sea westward.
Look, I have divided up these remaining nations for you by casting lots, giving them as an inheritance to your tribes. This includes the land from the Jordan River, along with all the nations I have already defeated, all the way to the Mediterranean Sea in the west.
Joshua is reminding the Israelites that God has given them specific portions of the Promised Land as their permanent inheritance, including both conquered and unconquered territories.
📚 Historical Context
This is part of Joshua's farewell address to the Israelite leaders near the end of his life, after they had conquered much of Canaan. The land allocation by 'lot' was a common ancient practice where they would cast stones or other objects to determine God's will in dividing territory among the twelve tribes. Some Canaanite nations still remained unconquered, but God had promised these lands would also belong to Israel.
