📚 Historical Context
In the book of Joshua, the Israelites were preparing to enter and conquer the Promised Land after their long exodus from Egypt. Joshua sent two spies to scout the city of Jericho, where they were hidden by Rahab, a local woman who feared the God of Israel and helped them evade capture. As the king's men pursued the spies out of the city toward the Jordan River, the gate was shut, which allowed the spies to escape safely and continue their mission.
