Give out from among you three men for each tribe: and I will send them, and they shall rise, and go through the land, and describe it according to the inheritance of them; and they shall come again to me.
Choose three men from each tribe, and I will send them out. They will travel throughout the land and write down a description of it based on how it should be divided as an inheritance. Then they will return to me with their report.
Joshua is instructing the tribes to select representatives who will survey and map out the remaining land so it can be properly divided among the tribes as their inheritance.
📚 Historical Context
This takes place after Israel had conquered much of the Promised Land under Joshua's leadership. Seven tribes had not yet received their allocated portions of land, so Joshua organized a systematic survey to properly divide the remaining territory. The surveyors would create detailed descriptions and maps to ensure fair distribution of the inheritance God had promised to each tribe.
