With whom the Reubenites and the Gadites have received their inheritance, which Moses gave them, beyond Jordan eastward, even as Moses the servant of the LORD gave them;
Along with the half-tribe of Manasseh, the tribes of Reuben and Gad had already received their inheritance on the east side of the Jordan River, which Moses had given them, just as Moses the servant of the LORD had promised them.
This verse explains that two and a half tribes had already received their land inheritance on the east side of the Jordan River, as Moses had promised them before his death.
📚 Historical Context
In the biblical narrative of the Israelite conquest of Canaan, the tribes of Reuben and Gad had previously requested land east of the Jordan River from Moses, as they were herdsmen who saw it as suitable for their livestock. Moses granted this inheritance to them before his death, as recorded in the Book of Numbers, fulfilling part of God's promise to give the Israelites the Promised Land. This allocation occurred while the rest of the tribes prepared to cross the Jordan for further conquest under Joshua's leadership.
