📚 Historical Context
The Gibeonites had recently made a peace treaty with Joshua through deception, pretending to be from a distant land when they were actually nearby Canaanites. Now the other Canaanite kings were furious about this alliance and had formed a coalition to punish Gibeon for making peace with Israel. Despite being tricked into the treaty, Joshua was honor-bound to protect his new allies.
