Yea, the stork in the heaven knoweth her appointed times; and the turtle and the crane and the swallow observe the time of their coming; but my people know not the judgment of the LORD.
Even the stork in the sky knows when it's time to migrate; and the dove, the crane, and the swallow all watch for the right season to return. But my people don't understand the Lord's ways or recognize when he's acting.
God is pointing out that even birds know when to follow their natural patterns, but his people have lost touch with recognizing his timing and judgment.
📚 Historical Context
During the time of the prophet Jeremiah in the 7th century BC, Judah was experiencing moral and spiritual decline amid political instability, as the nation faced threats from the Babylonian Empire. In this verse, Jeremiah uses the instinctive migration patterns of birds like the stork, turtledove, crane, and swallow to contrast the natural world's obedience to its seasons with the people's failure to heed God's laws and impending judgments. This imagery serves as a rebuke within Jeremiah's broader prophecies warning of exile if the nation did not repent.
