And the carcases of this people shall be meat for the fowls of the heaven, and for the beasts of the earth; and none shall fray them away.
The dead bodies of these people will become food for the birds in the sky and the wild animals on the ground, and no one will be there to chase them away.
God is warning that the people's rebellion will lead to such complete destruction that their bodies won't even receive proper burial, the ultimate sign of abandonment and judgment.
📚 Historical Context
During the time of the prophet Jeremiah in the 7th century BC, the nation of Judah was facing God's judgment for their widespread idolatry, corruption, and failure to follow His laws, as the Babylonian threat loomed. Jeremiah delivered this prophecy in a sermon at the temple gate, warning the people that their unrepentance would lead to devastating defeat, including the desecration of the dead as a symbol of total humiliation. This imagery reflected ancient Near Eastern customs where unburied bodies signified ultimate disgrace and abandonment by God.
