Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.
This is what the LORD says: Stop where you are on the roads and look around. Ask about the ancient paths, find out where the good way is, and walk on it. Then you will find rest for your souls. But the people said, 'We will not walk on it.'
God is calling His people to return to the tried-and-true ways of faithfulness that bring peace to the soul, but they refuse to listen.
📚 Historical Context
During the time of the prophet Jeremiah, around the 6th century BC, the nation of Judah was facing moral and spiritual decline due to widespread idolatry and disobedience to God's laws. Jeremiah was warning the people that God was calling them to pause and consider the ancient paths of righteousness that had guided their ancestors, as a way to avoid impending judgment from invading forces like Babylon. Despite this divine plea, the people rejected the advice, leading to their exile and suffering.
