In their heat I will make their feasts, and I will make them drunken, that they may rejoice, and sleep a perpetual sleep, and not wake, saith the LORD.
When they're all fired up and partying, I'll give them exactly the kind of feast they deserve, I'll make them so drunk on judgment that they'll celebrate their way into a sleep they'll never wake up from, says the LORD.
God's saying their final party will be their last one.
📚 Historical Context
In the historical context, Jeremiah was prophesying against the Babylonian Empire, which had conquered Judah and exiled the Israelites, as part of God's broader judgment on nations that oppressed His people. This verse uses the imagery of feasts and drunkenness to symbolize how God would deceive Babylon into overconfidence, leading to their ultimate downfall. It reflects the biblical narrative of divine retribution against empires that exalted themselves above God.
