And I will punish him and his seed and his servants for their iniquity; and I will bring upon them, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and upon the men of Judah, all the evil that I have pronounced against them; but they hearkened not.
I will punish King Jehoiakim, his descendants, and his officials for their sins. I will bring all the disasters I warned about on them, the people of Jerusalem, and all the people of Judah, because they wouldn't listen to me.
God is declaring that He will follow through on His promised judgment against King Jehoiakim and the people because they refused to listen to His warnings.
📚 Historical Context
This verse comes after King Jehoiakim burned the scroll containing God's warnings that Jeremiah had dictated to his scribe Baruch. Despite multiple opportunities to repent, the king and his court showed contempt for God's word by destroying it. This was during the final years before Babylon would destroy Jerusalem in 586 BC.
