Then will I cast away the seed of Jacob, and David my servant, so that I will not take any of his seed to be rulers over the seed of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: for I will cause their captivity to return, and have mercy on them.
Only then would I reject the descendants of Jacob and refuse to choose any of David's descendants to rule over the children of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. But I will bring them back from captivity and show them mercy.
God is promising that He will never abandon His covenant with Israel and David's family - instead, He will restore them and show them mercy.
📚 Historical Context
This verse comes during Jeremiah's prophecy while Jerusalem was under siege by Babylon (around 587 BC). The people feared God had permanently abandoned His promises to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and David. Jeremiah was reassuring them that God's covenants were unbreakable, even though they would face exile.
