Turn, O backsliding children, saith the LORD; for I am married unto you: and I will take you one of a city, and two of a family, and I will bring you to Zion:
Come back to me, you rebellious children, says the LORD; because I am your husband. I will gather you, one from this city and two from that family, and I will bring you to Zion.
God is calling His people who have wandered away to return to Him, promising to gather them from wherever they are scattered and bring them home because He loves them like a faithful husband.
📚 Historical Context
During the time of the prophet Jeremiah, the people of Judah were facing judgment from God due to their persistent idolatry and unfaithfulness to the covenant, which led to the looming threat of exile by the Babylonian empire. In this verse, God uses the metaphor of a marriage to express His enduring commitment to His people despite their "backsliding," calling them to repent and return. He promises to gather a remnant, one from a city and two from a family, back to Zion, symbolizing restoration and the hope of national renewal after their disobedience.
