Thus saith the LORD God of Israel; Behold, I will turn back the weapons of war that are in your hands, wherewith ye fight against the king of Babylon, and against the Chaldeans, which besiege you without the walls, and I will assemble them into the midst of this city.
This is what the LORD God of Israel says: Look, I will turn your weapons of war against you, the very weapons you're using to fight the king of Babylon and the Babylonian army that has surrounded your city. I will bring your enemies right into the heart of Jerusalem.
God is telling Jerusalem that He will cause their own weapons to fail them and allow their Babylonian enemies to enter the city.
📚 Historical Context
During the time of King Zedekiah's reign in Judah around 586 BC, the Babylonian Empire under King Nebuchadnezzar was besieging Jerusalem as part of God's judgment on the nation's persistent idolatry and rebellion against His covenant. Jeremiah, as God's prophet, delivered this message to warn the people that their military efforts would fail, with God Himself turning their weapons against them. This reflects the broader biblical theme of divine sovereignty, where God uses historical events to enforce accountability.
