Then shalt thou say unto them, Because your fathers have forsaken me, saith the LORD, and have walked after other gods, and have served them, and have worshipped them, and have forsaken me, and have not kept my law;
Then you should tell them, 'Because your ancestors abandoned me,' says the LORD, 'and followed other gods, served them, and worshipped them. They abandoned me and did not obey my law.'
God is explaining that the current generation is suffering consequences because their ancestors turned away from Him to worship false gods and disobey His commands.
📚 Historical Context
This verse comes during Jeremiah's ministry around 600 BC, just before Babylon destroyed Jerusalem. The prophet was explaining to the people why they were facing such devastating judgment - it was the culmination of generations of idol worship and disobedience that had started centuries earlier. The 'fathers' refers to previous generations who had repeatedly turned to worship Canaanite gods like Baal and Asherah instead of remaining faithful to the LORD.
