Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the prophets that prophesy in my name, and I sent them not, yet they say, Sword and famine shall not be in this land; By sword and famine shall those prophets be consumed.
Therefore, this is what the LORD says about the prophets who claim to speak for me, even though I never sent them. They keep saying, 'There will be no war or famine in this land.' But those very prophets will die by war and famine.
God is declaring that false prophets who claim to speak for Him while giving people false hope will face the very disasters they said wouldn't happen.
📚 Historical Context
This was spoken during Jeremiah's ministry before Jerusalem's destruction in 586 BC, when many false prophets were telling people that God would protect them and that no disaster would come. These prophets contradicted Jeremiah's warnings about the coming Babylonian invasion and exile. The people preferred these comforting lies over Jeremiah's difficult but true message from God.
