Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the prophets that prophesy in my name, and I sent them not, yet they say, Sword and famine shall not be in this land; By sword and famine shall those prophets be consumed.
Therefore, this is what the LORD says about the prophets who claim to speak for me, even though I never sent them. They keep saying, 'There will be no war or famine in this land.' But those very prophets will die by war and famine.
God is declaring that false prophets who claim to speak for Him while giving people false hope will face the very disasters they said wouldn't happen.
📚 Historical Context
In the 7th century BC, during the decline of the Kingdom of Judah under threats from the Babylonian Empire, the prophet Jeremiah was delivering God's warnings of judgment for the nation's sins like idolatry and unfaithfulness. False prophets were misleading the people by falsely claiming that disasters such as war and famine would not occur, offering false hope to avoid accountability. This verse reflects God's direct response, pronouncing that these deceptive prophets would suffer the very punishments they denied.
