When they fast, I will not hear their cry; and when they offer burnt offering and an oblation, I will not accept them: but I will consume them by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence.
When they fast, I will not listen to their cries for help. When they offer burnt sacrifices and grain offerings, I will not accept them. Instead, I will destroy them through war, hunger, and disease.
God is saying that religious rituals without genuine repentance are meaningless, and He will allow judgment to come through war, famine, and plague.
📚 Historical Context
This verse comes during Jeremiah's ministry before Judah's exile to Babylon, around 605-586 BC. The people were going through the motions of religious worship while continuing in idolatry and injustice. God had repeatedly warned them through prophets, but they refused to truly turn back to Him with their hearts.
