For the LORD of hosts, that planted thee, hath pronounced evil against thee, for the evil of the house of Israel and of the house of Judah, which they have done against themselves to provoke me to anger in offering incense unto Baal.
The LORD Almighty, who planted you like a tree, has declared disaster will come upon you because of the evil done by both Israel and Judah. They have brought this trouble on themselves by making me angry through burning incense to the false god Baal.
God is announcing judgment on His people because they turned away from Him to worship false gods, bringing disaster on themselves.
📚 Historical Context
This verse was spoken during the final years of the kingdom of Judah, when the people had repeatedly turned to worship Baal and other Canaanite gods despite God's warnings through prophets. Baal worship involved offering incense and sacrifices at high places and involved immoral practices that directly violated God's covenant with Israel. Jeremiah delivered this message shortly before Babylon would destroy Jerusalem in 586 BC as God's judgment for their persistent idolatry.
