See, I have this day set thee over the nations and over the kingdoms, to root out, and to pull down, and to destroy, and to throw down, to build, and to plant.
Look, today I have given you authority over nations and kingdoms. Your job is to uproot and tear down, to destroy and overthrow, but also to build up and plant new things.
God is giving Jeremiah the authority to deliver messages that will both tear down what is wrong and build up what is right among the nations.
📚 Historical Context
Jeremiah was a prophet from Anathoth in Judah, called by God during the reign of King Josiah in the 7th century BC, a time when the nation was steeped in idolatry and facing the threat of Babylonian invasion. In this verse, God commissions Jeremiah to speak with authority over nations and kingdoms, tasking him with both destructive actions like uprooting evil and constructive ones like building and planting, as part of His plan to address Judah's spiritual decline. This calling reflects God's pattern of using individuals to deliver messages of judgment and restoration amid historical turmoil.
