In the same day shall the Lord shave with a razor that is hired, namely, by them beyond the river, by the king of Assyria, the head, and the hair of the feet: and it shall also consume the beard.
On that day, the Lord will use a hired razor—the king of Assyria from beyond the Euphrates River—to shave off all the hair from your head, your body, and your beard.
God is warning that He will use the Assyrian army as His instrument to bring complete humiliation and judgment upon His people.
📚 Historical Context
This prophecy was given around 735 BC when Assyria was the dominant military power threatening the region. Isaiah was warning King Ahaz of Judah that relying on political alliances instead of trusting God would lead to devastating consequences. The imagery of shaving was particularly shameful in ancient Middle Eastern culture, symbolizing complete defeat and humiliation.
