They shall not build, and another inhabit; they shall not plant, and another eat: for as the days of a tree are the days of my people, and mine elect shall long enjoy the work of their hands.
They will not build houses only to have someone else live in them; they will not plant crops only to have someone else eat them. My people will live as long as trees, and my chosen ones will enjoy the work they do with their own hands.
God is promising His people a future where they will enjoy the fruits of their own labor for a very long time, without others taking what they've worked for.
📚 Historical Context
Isaiah wrote this prophecy during a time when Israel faced threats from powerful empires like Assyria and Babylon, who would conquer nations and force people from their homes and lands. The Israelites had experienced or were facing the possibility of exile, where invaders would take over their houses, fields, and possessions. This promise offered hope for a restored future where such injustices would end.
