Thus saith thy Lord the LORD, and thy God that pleadeth the cause of his people, Behold, I have taken out of thine hand the cup of trembling, even the dregs of the cup of my fury; thou shalt no more drink it again:
This is what your Lord God says, your God who defends his people: 'Look, I have taken away from you the cup of suffering, even the bitter last drops of my anger. You will never have to drink from it again.'
God is promising to remove the suffering and punishment his people have endured, assuring them they won't have to go through it again.
📚 Historical Context
In the time of the prophet Isaiah, around the 8th century BC, the people of Judah were enduring exile and judgment from God as a consequence of their persistent idolatry and disobedience, which led to their defeat and captivity by foreign powers like Babylon. The "cup of trembling" is a metaphorical image drawn from ancient Near Eastern culture, representing overwhelming suffering, divine wrath, and the humiliation of God's people during their punishment. Through this verse, God reassures Israel of His role as their defender, promising to end their ordeal and bring restoration as part of His covenant faithfulness.
