When the boughs thereof are withered, they shall be broken off: the women come, and set them on fire: for it is a people of no understanding: therefore he that made them will not have mercy on them, and he that formed them will shew them no favour.
When the branches are dried up, they will be broken off. Women will come and use them for firewood. This is a people who don't understand, so their Creator will not have mercy on them, and the One who formed them will show them no kindness.
God is saying that when people refuse to understand and follow Him, even their Creator will withdraw His mercy and favor from them.
📚 Historical Context
Isaiah was a prophet in ancient Judah during the 8th century BC, delivering messages from God about the nation's unfaithfulness and the consequences of turning away from Him. This verse uses the imagery of a withered vine or tree being broken and burned to symbolize God's judgment on a people lacking spiritual understanding, likely referring to Israel or Judah amid threats from invading empires like Assyria. It fits into a broader biblical narrative of warnings about idolatry and rebellion, emphasizing that divine mercy depends on repentance.
