And shall consume the glory of his forest, and of his fruitful field, both soul and body: and they shall be as when a standard-bearer fainteth.
And He will completely destroy the glory of his forest and his fertile fields, both the spirit and the body of it. They will be like when a flag-bearer collapses and falls.
God is saying He will completely destroy Assyria's strength and glory, leaving them as helpless as a fallen soldier who can no longer carry the battle flag.
📚 Historical Context
During the 8th century BC, the prophet Isaiah was speaking to the people of Judah amid the threat of the powerful Assyrian empire, which had conquered many nations and was known for its brutal military campaigns. In this verse, the "forest" and "fruitful field" metaphorically represent Assyria's vast armies and resources, which God promises to destroy as punishment for their pride and oppression of Israel. This prophecy fits into a broader biblical narrative of God's sovereignty, where He protects His people and judges arrogant nations.
