There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?
No one in this household has more authority than I do, and my master has not kept anything from me except you, because you are his wife. So how could I do such a terrible wrong and sin against God?
Joseph is explaining why he cannot betray his master's trust by being unfaithful with his master's wife, recognizing it would be both a betrayal and a sin against God.
📚 Historical Context
In the biblical narrative, Joseph, who had been sold into slavery by his brothers, rose to a position of great trust in the household of Potiphar, an Egyptian official serving Pharaoh. Despite his authority, Joseph faced intense temptation when Potiphar's wife attempted to seduce him, testing his moral resolve in a culture where such advances might have been overlooked. Joseph's response highlighted his commitment to God's laws, even in a foreign land where he lacked social protections.
