📚 Historical Context
In the biblical narrative, Jacob had fled from his father-in-law Laban after years of conflict and deception over family and possessions. Laban caught up with Jacob, and they met to make a peace agreement, during which Laban built a heap of stones and a pillar as a visible boundary between their territories. This act symbolized a covenant to not cross into each other's land or bring harm upon one another.
