And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.
I will give to you and your descendants after you the land where you now live as a foreigner, all the land of Canaan, as a permanent inheritance that will belong to you forever. And I will be their God.
God is promising Abraham that his family will permanently own the land of Canaan and that He will be their God forever.
📚 Historical Context
In the biblical account, God is reaffirming His covenant with Abraham in Genesis 17, where Abraham, originally from Mesopotamia, had been living as a stranger in the land of Canaan. This promise of the land as an everlasting possession was part of God's plan to establish a nation through Abraham's descendants, fulfilling earlier promises and setting the stage for the future history of Israel. The context reflects the ancient Near Eastern culture where land ownership was crucial for identity and security.
