And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth: so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be numbered.
And I will make your descendants as numerous as the dust of the earth. If anyone could count every speck of dust on the earth, then they could count your descendants too.
God is promising Abraham that his family line will grow to be countless—so many descendants that they'd be impossible to count, like trying to count dust particles.
📚 Historical Context
This promise was given to Abraham (then called Abram) when he was childless and elderly, making it seem humanly impossible. God had called Abraham to leave his homeland and follow Him to a new land, promising to make him into a great nation. At this point in the story, Abraham had just separated from his nephew Lot due to conflicts between their herdsmen.
