And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother’s son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came.
So Abram took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all their possessions that they had collected, and all the people who had joined their household in Haran. They set out for the land of Canaan, and they arrived there.
This verse shows Abram obeying God's call by leaving everything familiar behind and taking his entire household on a journey to the land God had promised him.
📚 Historical Context
In the biblical narrative, Genesis 12:5 continues the story of Abram's response to God's call, where he gathers his family, including his wife Sarai and nephew Lot, along with their possessions, and leaves Haran as instructed. This migration occurs after God promised to make Abram's descendants into a great nation and to bless him, as described in the preceding verses of Genesis 12. Historically, Haran was an ancient city in Mesopotamia known for trade and as a cultural crossroads, symbolizing a shift from Abram's ancestral roots to a new land that God designated for his future.
