As for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance was like burning coals of fire, and like the appearance of lamps: it went up and down among the living creatures; and the fire was bright, and out of the fire went forth lightning.
These living creatures looked like burning coals and bright lamps all mixed together. Fire was moving up and down between them, glowing so bright that lightning was shooting out of it.
When you're in God's presence, even the atmosphere is electric.
📚 Historical Context
Ezekiel was a priest and prophet among the Jewish exiles in Babylon around 593 BC, during the Babylonian captivity, when Judah had been conquered and its people displaced from their homeland. In this inaugural vision by the Chebar River, he describes heavenly beings known as cherubim, which are part of a theophany revealing God's throne and glory, emphasizing His sovereignty even in exile. This imagery draws from ancient Near Eastern concepts of divine manifestations but uniquely portrays God's holiness to encourage the exiles.
