And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses said unto the people, Ye have sinned a great sin: and now I will go up unto the LORD; peradventure I shall make an atonement for your sin.
The next day, Moses said to the people, 'You have committed a terrible sin. Now I will go up to the LORD to see if I can make things right and obtain forgiveness for your sin.'
Moses tells the Israelites they have committed a serious sin and promises to go before God to try to make atonement and seek forgiveness for them.
📚 Historical Context
In the book of Exodus, the Israelites had recently been freed from slavery in Egypt and were at Mount Sinai where God was giving Moses the Ten Commandments. While Moses was on the mountain, the people grew impatient and persuaded Aaron to make a golden calf for them to worship, which was a direct violation of God's commands. The next day, after confronting the idol and its consequences, Moses addressed the people about their serious sin and prepared to intercede with God on their behalf.
