I denounce unto you this day, that ye shall surely perish, and that ye shall not prolong your days upon the land, whither thou passest over Jordan to go to possess it.
I warn you today that if you choose disobedience, you will surely be destroyed, and you will not live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan River to take possession of.
Moses is warning the Israelites that choosing to turn away from God will lead to destruction and losing the Promised Land they're about to enter.
📚 Historical Context
In the book of Deuteronomy, Moses is speaking to the Israelites on the plains of Moab as they prepare to enter the Promised Land after their 40 years of wandering in the wilderness due to unbelief. He is delivering a solemn warning about the dire consequences of breaking their covenant with God, including exile and destruction if they turn to idolatry or disobey His commands. This verse fits into a broader renewal of the covenant, where Moses outlines the blessings for obedience and curses for rebellion as they stand on the brink of possessing the land across the Jordan.
