And toward her young one that cometh out from between her feet, and toward her children which she shall bear: for she shall eat them for want of all things secretly in the siege and straitness, wherewith thine enemy shall distress thee in thy gates.
She will even turn against her newborn baby and the children she gives birth to, secretly eating them because she has nothing else during the terrible siege when your enemies surround and attack your cities.
This verse describes the horrific desperation that would come during enemy sieges - so severe that even mothers would resort to the unthinkable to survive.
📚 Historical Context
In the book of Deuteronomy, Moses is delivering a farewell address to the Israelites, outlining the blessings for obedience and the severe curses for disobedience to God's covenant. This verse is part of a larger section describing the horrors of enemy sieges, which were common in the ancient Near East, where prolonged warfare could lead to extreme famine and desperation, including unthinkable acts like cannibalism. These warnings were intended to motivate the Israelites to remain faithful and avoid the real historical consequences faced by nations in that era.
