Take heed to thyself that thou be not snared by following them, after that they be destroyed from before thee; and that thou enquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? even so will I do likewise.
Be careful that you don't get trapped into following their ways after they have been destroyed from in front of you. Don't ask about their gods, saying, 'How did these nations worship their gods? I want to do the same thing.'
God is warning His people not to be curious about or copy the religious practices of the nations they're replacing in the Promised Land.
📚 Historical Context
Moses is giving final instructions to the Israelites before they enter the Promised Land, where they would encounter and displace various Canaanite nations. These nations practiced idolatry and often included harmful rituals like child sacrifice in their worship. God wanted His people to stay completely separate from these practices and remain faithful to Him alone.
