But hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou, and thy lords, thy wives, and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified:
Instead, you went and disrespected the Lord of heaven. You had them bring out the sacred cups from his temple, and you, your officials, your wives, and your side pieces all drank wine from them. You praised your little statues made of silver, gold, bronze, iron, wood, and stone, things that can't see, can't hear, and literally know nothing. But the God who controls every breath you take and every move you make? You didn't give him any respect at all.
You praised dead statues while disrespecting the God who literally keeps you breathing.
📚 Historical Context
In the historical setting of the Babylonian Empire, King Belshazzar held a lavish feast where he used the sacred vessels from the Jerusalem Temple, which had been captured by his predecessor Nebuchadnezzar. This act symbolized his arrogance and defiance against the God of Israel, as he and his court praised lifeless idols made of metal and stone while ignoring the true God who controls all things. Daniel, a Jewish exile and prophet in Babylon, was called upon to interpret the mysterious writing on the wall that appeared as a divine judgment during this event.
