And for the majesty that he gave him, all people, nations, and languages, trembled and feared before him: whom he would he slew; and whom he would he kept alive; and whom he would he set up; and whom he would he put down.
Because of the incredible power God gave him, everyone from every nation and language was terrified of him. He had total control, he could end someone's life or spare it, lift people up to greatness or completely destroy them. His word was literally life or death.
When God gives someone that level of power, the whole world holds its breath.
📚 Historical Context
This verse is from the Book of Daniel, chapter 5, where the prophet Daniel is interpreting a divine message to King Belshazzar during a feast in Babylon. It describes the former king Nebuchadnezzar's absolute authority, which God had granted him, leading all peoples and nations to fear and obey him without question. During the height of the Babylonian Empire, such power symbolized God's sovereignty over earthly rulers, as seen in Nebuchadnezzar's conquests and decrees.
