Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of the children of Ammon, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have ripped up the women with child of Gilead, that they might enlarge their border:
This is what God says: 'The people of Ammon have crossed the line way too many times, and I'm not backing down from what's coming their way. They murdered pregnant women in Gilead just to grab more land for themselves.'
God doesn't let violence against the innocent slide, there are always consequences for cruelty.
📚 Historical Context
In the 8th century BC, the prophet Amos was called by God to deliver warnings of judgment against Israel's neighboring nations, including the Ammonites, who were descendants of Lot and had a history of conflict with Israel over land. The Ammonites committed extreme atrocities, such as killing pregnant women in the region of Gilead, as part of their aggressive campaigns to expand their borders during ancient wars. This reflects the violent territorial disputes common in the ancient Near East, where conquest often involved ruthless tactics.
