📚 Historical Context
In the book of Acts, Stephen is delivering a speech before the Sanhedrin, recounting key events from Israel's history to defend his faith and show how God has always worked through His people. This verse specifically references the Old Testament story in Genesis, where Joseph, who had been sold into slavery by his brothers but rose to power in Egypt, invited his father Jacob and the rest of the family to escape a severe famine. The phrase "threescore and fifteen souls" means 75 people, highlighting the full extent of the family that relocated to Egypt under God's providence.
