Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection.
We need someone who was there from the very beginning, from when John was baptizing people all the way until Jesus was taken up to heaven. This person has to join us as a witness to tell everyone that Jesus really did come back to life.
They needed someone who saw the whole story firsthand to help spread the most important news ever.
📚 Historical Context
In the Book of Acts, shortly after Jesus' ascension, the apostles were in Jerusalem selecting a replacement for Judas Iscariot, who had betrayed Jesus and died. They required a candidate who had accompanied Jesus from the start of John the Baptist's ministry through to His ascension, ensuring this person could serve as a credible eyewitness to Jesus' resurrection and the events of His life. This process underscored the early church's emphasis on reliable testimony to establish the foundation of their message.
