And David said unto him, Fear not: for I will surely shew thee kindness for Jonathan thy father’s sake, and will restore thee all the land of Saul thy father; and thou shalt eat bread at my table continually.
David said to him, 'Don't be afraid! I will definitely show you kindness because of your father Jonathan, and I will give back to you all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul. You will always have a place to eat at my table.'
David is promising to show kindness and provide for Mephibosheth (Jonathan's son) by restoring his family's land and welcoming him to eat at the royal table permanently.
📚 Historical Context
In the historical context of ancient Israel, David had made a covenant with his friend Jonathan, Saul's son, promising to show kindness to his descendants after Saul's death. As king, David actively sought out any surviving relatives of Saul and discovered Mephibosheth, Jonathan's crippled son, who lived in obscurity. David then extended mercy by restoring Saul's land to Mephibosheth and inviting him to eat at his table, reflecting ancient customs of honoring alliances and providing for the vulnerable.
