And I will stretch over Jerusalem the line of Samaria, and the plummet of the house of Ahab: and I will wipe Jerusalem as a man wipeth a dish, wiping it, and turning it upside down.
I will measure Jerusalem for destruction just like I did with Samaria and the family of Ahab. I will wipe Jerusalem completely clean, like someone washing a dish, scrubbing it clean and turning it upside down to dry.
God is saying He will completely destroy and empty Jerusalem because of their sins, just as He destroyed other wicked places before.
📚 Historical Context
In the biblical narrative, King Manasseh of Judah ruled during a time of widespread idolatry and moral decline, directly defying God's laws and leading the people into practices that echoed the sins of the Northern Kingdom of Israel. Samaria, as the capital of that northern kingdom, had been utterly destroyed by the Assyrian empire in 722 BC as divine judgment for similar unfaithfulness under wicked kings like Ahab. This verse serves as a prophetic warning that Jerusalem would face the same measuring and wiping out, symbolizing complete destruction due to persistent rebellion.
