So he died according to the word of the LORD which Elijah had spoken. And Jehoram reigned in his stead in the second year of Jehoram the son of Jehoshaphat king of Judah; because he had no son.
So he died just as the LORD had said through Elijah. And Jehoram took over as king in his place during the second year that Jehoram son of Jehoshaphat was king of Judah, because the dead king had no son to inherit the throne.
This verse confirms that King Ahaziah died exactly as God had predicted through the prophet Elijah, and his brother Jehoram became king since Ahaziah had no sons.
📚 Historical Context
In the 9th century BC, during the divided kingdom of Israel and Judah, King Ahaziah of Israel consulted the pagan god Baal-Zebub for healing after an injury, which prompted the prophet Elijah to deliver a divine prophecy of death as judgment for his idolatry. This event unfolded in a time when kings often faced consequences for turning away from God, highlighting the ongoing tension between faithfulness to Yahweh and the influence of surrounding pagan cultures. As a result, Ahaziah died as foretold, and his brother Jehoram succeeded him to the throne of Israel since Ahaziah had no sons.
