To fulfil the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed her sabbaths: for as long as she lay desolate she kept sabbath, to fulfil threescore and ten years.
This happened to fulfill what the LORD had spoken through the prophet Jeremiah: the land would rest and enjoy its sabbaths. For as long as the land lay empty and desolate, it kept sabbath rest, completing seventy years.
This verse explains that the land of Israel remained empty for seventy years as God had promised through Jeremiah, giving the land the sabbath rest it had been denied.
📚 Historical Context
This refers to the Babylonian exile (586-516 BC) when most of the Jewish people were taken captive to Babylon and their land left largely uninhabited. According to Jewish law, the land was supposed to rest every seventh year (sabbath year), but the people had neglected this for many generations. God used the exile to enforce this rest period.
