And Ahaz slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city, even in Jerusalem: but they brought him not into the sepulchres of the kings of Israel: and Hezekiah his son reigned in his stead.
When Ahaz died, they buried him in Jerusalem, but not in the royal cemetery where the kings of Israel were buried. His son Hezekiah became king after him.
This verse tells us that King Ahaz died and was buried in Jerusalem, but because of his unfaithfulness to God, he wasn't given the honor of being buried with the other kings.
📚 Historical Context
In the historical context of the divided kingdom of Israel and Judah, Ahaz was a king of Judah known for his unfaithfulness to God, as he promoted idolatry and led the nation into alliances with foreign powers that brought defeat and suffering. His burial in Jerusalem but not in the royal tombs signifies the dishonor and separation from the godly legacy of his predecessors, reflecting the consequences of his sinful reign. This verse marks the transition to his son Hezekiah, who would become a faithful reformer.
