Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house, and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbour, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun.
This is what the LORD says: 'Listen, I will bring trouble against you from within your own family, and I will take your wives away from you while you watch, and give them to someone close to you, and he will sleep with your wives in broad daylight.'
God is telling David that because of his sin with Bathsheba and the murder of her husband, he will face consequences within his own family that mirror his secret sins but will happen publicly.
📚 Historical Context
In the biblical narrative, King David had committed adultery with Bathsheba and arranged for her husband Uriah's death to cover it up, leading to God's displeasure. The prophet Nathan was sent to confront David, and in this verse, he delivers God's prophecy as a direct consequence of David's sins, foretelling turmoil within David's own household. This highlights the accountability of leaders in ancient Israel under God's covenant.
