Because they have forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands; therefore my wrath shall be kindled against this place, and shall not be quenched.
Because they have abandoned me and burned incense to other gods, deliberately making me angry with everything they have made with their own hands, my anger will be set on fire against this place and will not be put out.
God is explaining that His fierce anger toward Jerusalem will burn uncontrolled because the people have abandoned Him to worship other gods.
📚 Historical Context
This verse comes from the prophetess Huldah's response when King Josiah consulted her about a book of the Law found during temple repairs around 621 BC. She was delivering God's judgment on Judah for generations of idolatry and unfaithfulness, despite Josiah's own righteous reforms. The 'other gods' likely included Canaanite deities like Baal and Asherah that the people had been worshiping alongside or instead of the Lord.
