Notwithstanding thou shalt not build the house; but thy son which shall come forth out of thy loins, he shall build the house for my name.
However, you will not be the one to build the temple; instead, your son who will be born to you, he will build the temple for my name.
God is telling David that while he won't build the temple himself, his son will have that honor.
📚 Historical Context
In the biblical narrative, King David of Israel desired to build a permanent temple for God, but the Lord instructed him through the prophet Nathan that he would not be the one to do it because he had been a man of war. Instead, God promised that David's son, Solomon, would build the temple as a house for God's name, which is what Solomon is recalling during his prayer at the temple's dedication in 2 Chronicles 6.
