And they drew out the staves of the ark, that the ends of the staves were seen from the ark before the oracle; but they were not seen without. And there it is unto this day.
They pulled the carrying poles of the ark out so far that the ends of the poles could be seen from the holy place in front of the Most Holy Place, but they couldn't be seen from outside the temple. And they are still there to this day.
This verse describes how the ark's carrying poles were positioned in Solomon's temple - visible from the holy place but hidden from public view, showing God's presence was both accessible and sacred.
📚 Historical Context
During King Solomon's reign, the Ark of the Covenant was placed in the Holy of Holies of the newly built Temple in Jerusalem, marking the completion of this grand structure as a dwelling place for God's presence among the Israelites. This ark, which contained the tablets of the Ten Commandments, was handled with great care according to God's instructions, and the staves (carrying poles) were left in place so their ends could be seen only from inside the sanctuary, not from outside, to preserve its sanctity. The phrase "unto this day" indicates that this arrangement remained as described up to the time the book of Chronicles was written, likely during or after the Babylonian exile.
